CG body mechanics

This summer I wanted to see if I would be able to do something that had more movement to it than the lip sync I posted up earlier. For a long time I've been wanting to do something capoeira related as well, and even though I think this sort of a movement would be more fun in hand drawn, it was a good opportunity to challange myself in Maya.

Unfortunately things have been piling up and I haven't been able to finish it yet(I have a hope for the christmas break), but I thought I would post it up here and maybe get some feedback before I finish it up.

Thanks :)

Project_Gouken

Hey you guys might have seen this online already but I didnt want to forget about AIB animation!

so this is a Street Fighter homage thought up by Laurent Rossi. Mr Rossi animated the characters, did the backgrounds, colouring and compositing....and I animated the FX :P hehe hope you all like!

Hey guys. So Figured id have a quick bash at this months 11 second club challenge. Would love to know what everyone thinks.

Its definitely nowhere near as finished as I would like. And there's an awful lot in there that's not particularly good at the moment. Maybe something I can work back into later. I think the main problem is there is just too much going on. Its not very clear. And in animation, clarity is everything.

I haven't entered it unfortunately. For a couple of reasons. But hey ho. It was a big old learning curve and i look forward to trying another one. Hopefully with a bit more success.

Nice sketchbook travel video

I found this sketchbook travel animation by Bastien Dubois. I really enjoyed it and thought I would share it. I'm not sure if the purpose of this blog is just to show work you are doing yourself or if it is also for inspirational stuff like this. So if I'm "breaking any rules", let me know :)

Ps. I noticed that people are able to put vimeo clips directly on to their blogs, but I only have the option of putting YouTube links on. Does anyone know why?

Hand Animation Update

Rough Character Animation from rory animates on Vimeo.

Hey I thought I would post an update over here since I posted an earlier version of my hand, so thanks a lot for all the feed back. An animator from Aardman came to visit the studio this week and called this bit of animation "beautiful" and played it over and over again. So I just wanted to say thanks again for all the feed back and encouragement from everyone on here.

First lip sync

UPDATE:

Here is a new, slightly altered based on the feedback.

I've been working on a lip sync to get some practise in facial animation since we don't get that as an exercise at uni. Concidering this is my first attempt of it, as well as my first time working in Maya when I understand the workflow and tools (though I have some rather less successful, but educational meetings with the program prior to this), I am quite happy with the result, but please give some critique:)

Here is some acting reference I did as well. Unfortunately, it's from an old mobile camera so the quality isn't great..

Old man

A blocking pass for a short character test that I'm currently attempting using the Blik rig. The long term idea is to use the same rig to act out various other ages and emotions. I just wanted to share this to get some feedback before I go to far.

The rig below is called Morpheus and the one I originally started the test with.
Unfortunately I had to drop it in favor of Blik due to my 8 year old laptop being a little to feeble to handle him. However I may still try some shorter dialogue or acting shots with him after getting more familiar with Maya again.

Faces

So, you may have already seen this test of mine but I thought i'd post it here anyway. The Animation Jumble has no regular topics so I thought i'd keep the momentum going. I'm currently working on some CG tests to follow shortly.

I also wanted to share this sequence of images with you! I found it amazing to see how far poses can be pushed 'in real life'. Thought you might enjoy it too!

Information Update

A few of you have asked about posting storyboards or scripts on the animation jumble.
I would like to inform you that these things are very welcome here. Please do post them!
Animation shouldn't just be about moving something around. I believe story is a crucial element to animation and it should have a places here too.

Super Hands

Finished up the trace on this shot of character animation. It's part of a larger scene, so in the film it will make more sense in context. I have to say hands are really strange things. They are like little characters all in their own right. I've always had trouble, like a lot of artists drawing hands, so I was really excited to approach this particular scene as a challenge.

cubéle

So this is my little buddy cubéle....

He was sort of a quick idea to test a few things in After effects, and after I got done I kinda liked him and started developing it into a mini short, but it never got finished :/

You can see the plan is very simple; The little cube runs along excitedly to some music. At certain points the camera zooms out quickly, colour changes and he's in a new mode of transport. This keeps happening (on the beat) until he's riding a planet, maybe a galaxy.

I imagined it to be fun and colourful, maybe 30 secs or so. But currently there's no story hook or character play... stuck ...so I'm going to open it up here for ideas! Tell me what to do, don't be a square! hehe...

Welcome to the AIB Animation jumble!

Lets get the ball rolling...

Going back to basics for the opening of the AIB Animation jumble.
note- doesn't always play smoothly on slow computers.
